Euphoria rating: Why is the series rated R?

As much as I love Euphoria, I can’t say I have recommended the HBO series to all of my friends. It’s just not for everyone. It features very mature topics and scenes that many would find triggering. If you are considering watching it, here’s why it’s rated R.

Don’t get me wrong, Euphoria is amazing. I love everything about it. From the characters, the storytelling, the stunning performances, and even the killer soundtrack. But even I have to look away from the screen at times when a scene becomes too much.

In Euphoria season 2 episode 1, “Trying to Get to Heaven Before They Close the Door,” there’s a very graphic scene that features someone getting beaten. Now, I think this character deserved the beat down, so much! But wow was that tough to watch! If you could barely watch Euphoria season 1, you should note that season 2 is set to be darker and feature more mature themes and violence.

Why is Euphoria rated R?

Euphoria pulls no punches and nothing is off limits. Even Zendaya took to social media to kindly remind audiences that the series is intended for mature viewers. In her note (which you can read here), she writes that this season is “deeply emotional” and deals with subject matter that “can be triggering and difficult to watch.”

Zendaya also notes that she will feel your support even if you don’t watch. We love Zendaya!

The series is rated R for violence, sexual content (including sexual abuse), language, drug usage, graphic scenes, nudity, and dark themes. On Common Sense Media, users suggest the series to kids over 16-years-old. It really depends on the maturity level of each person, but I think HBO giving this show an R rating is perfect.

New episodes of Euphoria air on HBO and stream on HBO Max Sunday nights at 8 p.m. ET.
