It looks like Step Up star Channing Tatum was devastated by the cancellation of his X-Men movie all over again during a recent interview with Variety. Tatum recalled being “in love” with the script, a suggestive stand-alone film inspired by the X-men mutant, Gambit. Everything was in the works for the project to be helmed by Twentieth Century For in 2016 with Tatum and Magic Mike producer Reid Carolin.
However, there was just one big problem–Tatum and Carolin wanted to direct it without any directing experience. Fox wasn’t exactly thrilled by this possible experiment gone wrong scenario, but it was ultimately the Disney purchase of Fox that pulled the plug on this venture. Tatum didn’t take it well.
Channing Tatum is still upset over Gambit movie cancelation
According to Carolin, they had already started casting, “opened up the production office” and were even heading to New Orleans (where comic book Gambit is from) to shoot. Suffice to say, things happened quickly. Tatum expressed that he felt “traumatized” by the ordeal and had to take a mindful step away from watching Marvel movies since then.
He described his iteration of Gambit as “flamboyant” and a lover of “fashion” that would add a similar comedic raunchiness as the Deadpool character did. In the comics, Gambit, real name Remy Lebeau, is an expert thief and mutant with the ability to manipulate kinetic energy to make just about anything explode. Tatum was a hug fan.
There was a live-action version of Gambit introduced before the Tatum project, in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, played by Taylor Kitsch, but the film received dismal reviews. With that said, Tatum’s dreams of portraying Gambit may not be forever beyond reach, as Marvel Studios President, Kevin Feige, has vaguely teased X-men characters eventually debuting in the Disney MCU. However, the version of Gambit with Tatum and Carolin directing and producing may never see the light of day.
