Predicting the winners at the 2022 Academy Awards

The 2022 Oscar nominations came out, and outside of giving Being the Ricardos three nominations, they weren’t half bad. But now that we have the nominations, who will take home the trophies. Today, I share who I think will take home the top prizes at the 2022 Academy Awards.

Now, I won’t be predicting every category today. Instead, I will be looking at the big six. Best Picture, Best Director and the four acting categories. Some of these are easier to predict than others because of how award season has already played out.

Predicting the winners at the 2022 Academy Awards

Best Supporting Actress: Ariana DeBose, West Side Story.

We saw a huge shock when Judi Dench was put in over Caitriona Balfe, but that has no bearing on the overall landscape of this category. The Oscar will go to one of two women, Ariana DeBose for her performance in West Side Story or Kirsten Dunst in The Power of the Dog. Debose is my front runner, but if the night goes to the dog, we could see a clean sweep by the film.

Best Supporting Actor: Troy Kotsur, CODA

We have another two-person race here and it’s between Kodi Smit-Mcphee, who has won EVERYTHING along the way, and the underdog story in Troy Kotsur for CODA. Kotsur became the first male deaf Academy nominee and has had some of the most beautiful reactions to his nominations. You have to remember part of the process is campaigning and I think we will see a lot of Kotsur over the next month and that gives him a slight edge here.

Best Actress: Nicole Kidman, Being the Ricardos

Probably the most competitive category on the table. A case can be made for each of the nominees. However, Nicole Kidman playing Lucille Ball seems like an easy pick to win it all. I am hoping I am wrong because I was not too fond of the performance and I would love to see Jessica Chastain or Kristen Stewart walk away with the Oscar, but I don’t see anyone overcoming Kidman right now.

Best Actor: Will Smith, King Richard

Will Smith has been fighting to get back in the Oscar conversation to take home his first crown finally and I think that is where we are heading on Oscar Night. Thankfully the performance is one of those overdue awards they tend to hand out because he was fantastic as Richard Williams in King Richard. Benedict Cumberbatch may have something to say about Smith winning, but I don’t see this being a close race.

Best Director: Jane Campion, The Power of the Dog

Jane Campion is winning this and no one is even close to her.

Best Picture: Belfast

I have NO clue who is winning Best Picture right now, but my head says The Power of the Dog, but I also am leaning Belfast. Now, Belfast missing editing nomination was a massive blow to the film and I am not sure they can win without it, but something about the film has me thinking it’s in the lead. The other two players in the field are King Richard and Don’t Look Up, who can play spoiler on Oscar Night.

Do you agree with my picks? If not, comment below you who you think will win.
