What happened to Marc’s mom on Moon Knight episode 5?
In episode 5 of Moon Knight, we learn that Marc is the main identity. Marc used to be part of a happy family, he lived with both parents and his younger brother. One day, Marc and his younger brother go inside a cave they often play and explore in. However, they’re not allowed to play there when it rains because if floods, something Marc’s brother reminds him about. Marc doesn’t listen and they enter the cave. Marc survives the flood, but not his little brother. Unable to properly grieve her son, Marc’s mom changes completely. She’s mean and abusive to Marc, blaming him for the death of her younger son.
The abuse is verbal and neglectful, but it quickly escalates to physical. Marc’s dad is no help. I would even call him an accomplice for not removing Marc out of this abusive situation that went on until Marc moved out. This is the reason Steven was created, to shield Marc from the abuse and bad memories.
Fans also learn that Marc’s mom is actually dead, she passed away two months ago. Still hurt and angry, Marc isn’t able to sit shiva for his mom, which he seems to regret as an overwhelming wave of emotions sends Steven back to the surface. Steven believes his mom is still alive and thinks he is speaking with her on the phone — all made up by Marc’s mind.
