The Resident fans said goodbye to Nurse Nic Nevins on the most recent episode of Season 5. Just why did Emily VanCamp choose to leave the series?

There was no way the show could handle VanCamp’s exit without killing her character, Nic, off. It just wouldn’t make sense for Nic to leave Conrad and her daughter behind. The only other option was for Nic to just not be able to get back for some absurd reason.
Instead, the show offered us a chance to grieve along with the other characters. We got to see Nic continue saving lives by being an organ donor. And more importantly, we got to see Conrad start the process of grieving and honor everything Nic stood for when Devon declared her brain dead.
Now our eyes are on why Emil VanCamp chose to leave the series after four seasons. She explained all after the episode aired.
Emily VanCamp chose to leave The Resident
Let’s get something straight: this was VanCamp’s choice. At no point did the show’s writers decide it would make good TV to kill off their lead female. It was heartbreaking to watch, and there are certainly a lot of disappointed and even angry fans.
This was all VanCamp’s decision. She explained to TVLine that part of it was the birth of her daughter, Iris. Shortly before the announcement that she was leaving, we learned VanCamp and her husband Josh Bowman welcome their first child.
VanCamp decided she wants to focus on family. The year of COVID filming and not being able to get back home all that much certainly also affected the decision. Her priorities changed to being about family instead of work, something that a lot of people realize as they get older.
The speculation as to why Emily VanCamp left The Resident is over. We have the truth from her, and we couldn’t be happier for her. Let’s be more supportive and just celebrate the bittersweetness of Nic’s exit on the series.
