Tuesday TV ratings: New Amsterdam up, The Resident down [Nov. 23]

The week of Thanksgiving is always a risky time to air new episodes of shows. Multiple networks did it this week, and the live TV ratings show.

A lot of networks traditionally opt for reruns this time of the year. It’s the run-up to Thanksgiving, and people tend to make plans with family. That’s especially the case this year after the 2020 we had.

So, putting on new episodes is risky. We see that with the live TV ratings.

Not all networks opted for new episodes, though. CBS had a night of reruns that still performed just as well as the new episodes on other networks. FOX opted for a rerun of The Masked Singer after a new episode of The Resident.

The Bachelorette down, New Amsterdam up in the live TV ratings

We’ll start with FOX since it only had one new episode of a show on. The Resident dipped another 33% in the demo and 4% in the audience. I’m not sure if this week will count all that much. FOX has possibly opted for a new episode this week purely to catch up after the World Series preempted an episode. However, the series is one that I’m concerned about.

The CW had new episodes of The Flash and Riverdale. I’m not all that concerned about either of them, but they did struggle this week. The Flash was down 56% in the demo, which is concerning for what used to be the top show on the network. Riverdale did see the audience go up by 5%, but the demo was down by 9%.

ABC also had a bad night. The Bachelorette was down 20% in the demo and down 12% in the total audience. I’m still expecting a renewal, but ABC might look at changing things up. It could be that we’ve had back-to-back seasons, or it could be that it’s on Tuesdays still. We’ll see.

Queens was down 28% in the demo and 13% in the audience. I don’t think the freshman series is going to be renewed with the way the numbers are going. The metrics are lower than a rerun of FBI: Most Wanted, which is extra concerning.

Finally, NBC. This was the only network to see a show with both the audience and demo up. New Amsterdam was up in both metrics, and this isn’t even a show we’re concerned about. It’s already been renewed for a fifth season.

The same applies to La Brea. That show was down in the metrics, but we’re not concerned. It’s already renewed. And I don’t think we have to be concerned about the dips in The Voice‘s metrics. The show was still the top of the night in both the demo and audience. NBC is pretty steady.
