With any classic TV show or movie, it’s always fun to think back to the what ifs. First draft endings are sometimes much different than the final scripts we see played out on our screens, and actors who were nearly cast would’ve changed the entire production. The same goes for the long-running sitcom Friends, as there were many famous actors who almost scored leading roles.
Saved by the Bell‘s Tiffani Thiessen and Elizabeth Berkley almost played Rachel Green, while it’s been rumored that Ellen DeGeneres was considered for the part of Phoebe Buffay. As for Monica Geller, Sex and the City‘s Kristin Davis was among the actresses who auditioned for the role, according to E! News.

While a guest on The Late Late Show With James Corden to promote the new Sex and the City revival, And Just Like That…, Davis recalled trying out for Friends. Although she’s a household name now, it seems she had a ton of competition when auditioning, admitting she didn’t even come close.
Davis revealed: “I think I was about one of like 8,000 young ladies who read for Monica.”
Davis also explained that she was close with Courteney Cox at the time, who eventually went on to win the role of Monica. That is, after she auditioned for the role of Rachel!
Of course, Friends fans know that Kristin Davis eventually did appear on the sitcom, playing Joey Tribbiani’s girlfriend Erin for one episode in season 7. Though it wasn’t a leading role, she still felt the pressure of acting on such a major show:
“I remember losing sleep. Partly because of the live audience, but partly because you’re in this world that has been created that is so alive and so specific and you’re trying to make sure you’re fitting yourself in there properly.”
While it would’ve been fun to see Davis have a bigger role on Friends, she’s certainly one of the more memorable guest stars the show had over the years.
