Fresh movie review: A tasteful thriller that keeps on biting

Day two of the Sundance Film Festival is here and today we have a the thriller Fresh from Mimi Cave, who is making her directorial debut. The film stars Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar-Jones.

The oddities of dating in present-day America are often hard to capture on the big screen. So far too often, films fail to get it right and capture its genuine authenticity. From the beginning of this film, Fresh takes us on the path of correcting other film’s mistakes by highlighting not just the oddity of it but the scary side of it as well.

Steve (Sebastian Stan) and Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones) stumble across each other at the grocery store. A cheesy pickup-line from Steve reels Noa in, and from there, they start engaging in a bit of a love affair. Her friend Mollie (Jojo T. Gibbs) has her concerns about the foundation of this relationship, but Noa wasn’t hearing them.

We soon find out that Steve isn’t who he says he is….. SURPRISE.

Sebastian Stan is a standout in Fresh

I am not sure I’ve seen Sebastian Stan any better. I was thoroughly impressed with the American Psycho-like performance he gave as Steve. Not only did he fully capture the creepy, villainous character perfectly, he also had this swagger about himself within the character that made him so damn lovable and hatable at the same time. It’s one of the better antagonists we’ve seen in a long time.

Daisy Edgar-Jones, who isn’t in enough films, also throughly impressed me with her work. From the care-free girl looking for love to the slowly taking back over, she showed some true range within this part.

Can we also talk about a banger of a score from Alex Sommers? The dude has an incredible track record of great work, but nothing has felt so haunting and scary as this one. It elevated the picture to make itself stand out as its own character.

Lauryn Kahn wrote a genuinely haunting film that captures the concerns of modern-day dating and how men can be downright vile creatures. Mimi Cave making her directorial debut, brought Kahn’s words to life in a way that makes me can’t wait to see what is next from her. She shot this to perfection.

Overall, Fresh is a thriller that you won’t want to miss and lucky for all of us, it is coming to Hulu on March 4, 2022.
