If there’s one thing we’ve waited forever for, it’s a Supernatural spin-off. The Supernatural prequel pilot is officially happening.
There have been a few attempts at bringing a Supernatural spin-off. The backdoor pilots included Bloodlines and Wayward Sisters. At one point, it looked like we might just get a spin-off with the female-led series, but it was a no-go in the end. Yes, I’m still salty!
The only spin-off that has really happened is Ghostfacers. That was a webseries, and yes, I count it as a spin-off.
But no spin-off has successfully made it to The CW as a full series. That hasn’t stopped fans from sharing ideas or from The CW even talking about things. It’s just a little harder now that the series has come to an end. It’s not impossible, though, as the recent news makes clear.
Supernatural prequel pilot ordered at The CW
The CW has ordered the pilot for the Supernatural prequel spin-off, according to TVLine. This has been in the works for a few months, with Jensen Ackles EPing it. Fans will remember the rift it caused between Ackles and his former co-star Jared Padalecki, who hadn’t heard anything about the series before Ackles announced it on social media.
This is just a pilot right now. That’s all that The CW will order at this time. It gives the network a chance to see what type of show to expect, and whether there will be an audience for it. This doesn’t guarantee that we’ll get the Supernatural spin-off we’ve been waiting for.
The CW will likely make a decision in May 2022 as to whether to pick it up to series or not.
What is the prequel series about?
Ackles will narrate the series in a bit of a Wonder Years/How I Met Your Mother type of way. The series itself is about John and Mary Winchester, including how they met, fell in love, and started a family.
We’ve seen bits of this story before. The fourth season took us back to the night Mary made the deal with Yellow Eyes/Azazel to save John leading to Sam being given demon blood and Mary dying on the ceiling. We also know Mary and her family were hunters, and she didn’t want her sons growing up in that life. John had no idea about any of it until after Mary’s death and ended up raising his sons in the life she never wanted.
This is Adult Dean’s telling of the story, though. He has never been the most reliable person to tell the story of his parents, especially his mom. He was only four when she died. When Mary returned from the dead after 30+ years, she wasn’t the mother he expected—and that was completely understandable!—and looking back, it was clear that the “memories” he had were sometimes what he wanted his mom to be.
