The Girl Before premieres Thursday, Feb. 10 on HBO Max. The series, which is a collaboration between BBC One and the streamer, blends mystery and thriller for a story that spins out of the tight control David Oyelowo’s Edward Monkford prefers and expects.
Centered on a paralleling storyline between the two female leads, Jane (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) and Emma (Jessica Plummer), the four episode series slowly reveals the strange story behind Edward and the house that’s essentially its own character on the show.
With one foot in the past and the other in the present, The Girl Before is an unsettling tale about obsession, the toll grief can take on a person, and the danger of allowing someone to have too much say over your life and what you do.
Most of the series takes place in the smart home that Edward built. The minimalist structure is the epitome of his ideal way of living which is disciplined, exact, and without err. Located on One Folgate Street, the house and Housekeeper (the AI in the building) is a blend of perfection and Big Brother.
Like the rest of the series, the setting is stylized with an aesthetic that supports the eeriness and oppressive nature of Edward’s strict standards. Here’s where The Girl Before was filmed including information on the house that’s a character unto its own.
The Girl Before filming locations
According to Hello Magazine, while the show is set in Hampstead, London, much of filming also took place in Bristol. When speaking on the decision, the show’s creator J.P. Delaney had the following to say:
We moved it from the book. In the book, it’s [set in] Cricklewood and we moved it to Hampstead. We actually shot in Bristol. Some of the locations are Bristol, some are London. But we had a very precise postcode for it in our heads. Even when you see the aerial shots, we sort of know whether they’re coming from the house into central London, so you might be going over Primrose Hill.
One Folgate Street, the location of Edward’s house, is a real street in Shoreditch (which is in East End of London). Though it’s not where principal filming on the house took place.
Is the house on One Folgate street real?
The interior of the house on One Folgate Street is a set that was built for the series at The Bottle Yard Studios in south Bristol. The exterior was shot in Redland. So, while the house itself isn’t real, it still is quite an impressive feat for the production designers on the show.
