Is The Girl Before based on a book?

The Girl Before makes its HBO Max debut on Thursday, Feb. 10. The mystery thriller centers on a paralleling story between two women, Jane and Emma, who lived in the same house at different times. Each woman needed a fresh start. However, their relationship with the house’s designer, Edward Monkford, proves dangerous.

Told in such a manner that the plot dives in and out of the past, this new limited series grabs viewers with the intensity of its unsettling plot. While tragic factors in the two women’s lives play heavily into their actions and overarching story, there’s also a mystery at the heart of The Girl Before that’ll leave you putting the pieces together from episode to episode.

With a total of four episode which make for a four hour viewing, the series is perfect for an end of the week binge or a paced watch as the mystery unravels before your eyes. As is typical of many of the stories that have taken a hold of our attention on the small and big screen, The Girl Before started as a book before it was adapted into a series.

Here’s what we know about the show’s source material!

What book is The Girl Before based on?

The HBO Max original is based on a book with the same name by J.P. Delaney that was published in 2017. Delaney is a pen name, according to Goodreads, and the author has written best-selling fiction under another name. However, this adaptation isn’t simply based on Delaney’s novel. The author created, wrote, and executive produced the series. Marissa Lestrade served as a co-writer.

At least in terms of its premise, the series seems to follow the plot of the book. Here’s a summary of the novel:

An enthralling psychological thriller that spins one woman’s seemingly good fortune and another woman’s mysterious fate through a kaleidoscope of duplicity, death, and deception.

The request seems odd, even intrusive – and for the two women who answer, the consequences are devastating.

Emma

Reeling from a traumatic break-in, Emma wants a new place to live. But none of the apartments she sees are affordable or feel safe. Until One Folgate Street. The house is an architectural masterpiece: a minimalist design of pale stone, plate glass, and soaring ceilings. But there are rules. The enigmatic architect who designed the house retains full control: no books, no throw pillows, no photos or clutter or personal effects of any kind. The space is intended to transform its occupant – and it does.

Jane

After a personal tragedy, Jane needs a fresh start. When she finds One Folgate Street, she is instantly drawn to the space – and to its aloof but seductive creator. Moving in, Jane soon learns about the untimely death of the home’s previous tenant, a woman similar to Jane in age and appearance. As Jane tries to untangle truth from lies, she unwittingly follows the same patterns, makes the same choices, crosses paths with the same people, and experiences the same terror as the girl before.
