There’s good news for fans of the hit-movie, The Full Monty. After almost 25 years since the film premiered, Disney+ has ordered an eight-episode limited series to be developed. According to TVLine, the show has already started production.
The BAFTA-winning 1997 film is about six men who desperately need money. To make some extra cash, they go for a male striptease act. The group promises their show will succeed because they are willing to go “the full monty,” aka completely naked.
The highly popular movie starred Robert Carlyle, Mark Addy, Steve Huison, Tom Wilkinson, Paul Barber, and Hugo Speer. Simon Beaufoy served as the writer for the 1997 film. The movie grossed $258 million at the Box Office at that time.
It’s been so many years since the movie premiered. So what can we expect to see in the new series?
What to expect in the Full Monty series
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Disney+ series, Full Monty, will follow the original six characters as they navigate the post-industrial city of Sheffield and society’s crumbling healthcare, education, and employment sectors. But, the show also explores how communal effort can triumph over adversity.
The six main cast members, as well as Beaufoy are all back for the series. Beaufoy created, wrote, and is executive producing Full Monty. The limited series will also involve the children and grandchildren of the returning characters.
It isn’t known yet if the Disney+ series will include stripping. Though the streaming service has some more mature content for adults to enjoy, this one may be surprising depending on the route they decide to take. A series that involves any kind of stripping would be a shock to have on Disney+. But the streaming service is probably trying to appeal to a larger audience since most of its options are obviously geared to kids and teens.
It’s also great that the original cast and the writer are the same. Reboots and sequels, especially after many years have passed, can be difficult and hard to work out. This can especially happen if not all familiar faces are on board. But The Full Monty fans can be rest assured that they’ll be seeing the same characters once again!
The new series will air on Disney+ globally, and on Hulu in the U.S.
