Ridley Road has made its Masterpiece on PBS debut. The four part series takes viewers to 1960s London when the music was swinging, the mod fashion trend was en vogue, and self-indulgent pleasure was glorified. The city was the place to be for the young and hip. But, for a growing fascist movement, it was also where neo-Nazis began to thrive and congregate.
The summer of 1962 was a turbulent time for Britain’s Jewish population. While there was a generation between World War II and their present, that didn’t mean antisemitism died. No, unfortunately, it was alive and taking root again with a quickness that demanded action.
Among those who rose up against the wave of violence befalling the community in the series is Vivien Epstein. The young hairdresser, who’d fallen in love with an antifascist activist named Jack Morris, refuses to sit on the sidelines when something can be done.
Her contribution to the uprising is that of espionage and her mission is to gather as much intel as she can from inside Britain’s neo-Nazi movement. However, that means getting up close and personal with their leader, Colin Jordan. Vivien is playing a dangerous game, and if she’s caught it could mean the end of her life. But when it comes to the lives of Jack and her people, she’s willing to risk that gamble.
