The Sandman is back on Netflix. The latest from Billy Madison Productions is dropping on Netflix Wednesday and it’s called Hustle.
The movie follows basketball scout Stanley (Adam Sandler) who is in a funk. He lost his job as a pro basketball scout and he’s on the hunt for the next big thing in the world of basketball.
Upon returning from a long scouting trip, Rex (the owner of the team) decided to promote Stanley to Assistant Coach. The news excited Stanley because it meant he could spend more time at home with his family and was a dream of his for a long time. Sadly, a few short days later, Rex passed away and his son, who isn’t a fan of Stanley, will now take over the team. He tells Stanley that he is moving him back on the road as a scout.
Even though he wanted to quit, Stanley hits the road and when he is on location to scout a player, he stumbles across what he believes is a once-in-a-generation talent on the blacktop. Stanley knows this can be his ticket back onto the team and Bo sees this as an opportunity to better his mother and daughter’s life. Bo needs Stanley and Stanley needs Bo.
Adam Sandler, Juancho Hernangomez, and Philly shine in Hustle
If anyone knows Adam Sandler, you know he has a HUGE passion for basketball. Because of that love, you see that within his performance. It may be one of my favorite of his to date. I was even more impressed with our introduction to Juancho Hernangomez, who made his acting debut. He knew what to do on the court, but what he and Sandler brought to the story made us want to root for the pair. Juancho is incredible in this.
One of the more brilliant things they did was shoot this movie in Philly. The city is MADE for cinematic sports heroes, including when they pay a little homage to Rocky Balboa himself. They utilized the town to make it its own part of the story and it was brilliant.
The direction by Jeremiah Zagar reminded me of the basketball movie last year, Boogie. It was in your face and put you smack dab in the middle of the court. I loved how each of the basketball sequences was shot.
Sure, the movie is a bit cliche and has some slightly cheesy moments, but you expect that from these types of films with this story and set in the world of sports. I loved all the cheese and ate it up. Ultimately, Netflix hit nothing but the net with Hustle. A strong performance from our co-leads, a supporting cast that elevates the leads and a story that everyone can root for.
Hustle comes to Netflix on June 8, 2022.
