Can you believe it’s been nearly 28 years since Friends first began? Sept. 2019 marked the 25th anniversary of the beloved TV series, which gave the show’s creators and actors a variety of opportunities to reminisce about their time spent on the big orange couch.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Friends co-creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane, along with producer Kevin Bright, spoke in front of a full theater after the viewing of two fan-favorite episodes, “The One With the Embryos” and “The One Where Everybody Finds Out,” at the 2019 Tribeca TV Festival.
At one point, Kauffman, Crane, and Bright were asked if they had any regrets about the show. Kauffman admitted there were two episodes that she wishes were slightly different, and both involve the character of Phoebe, played by Lisa Kudrow.
Kauffman stated that she was unhappy with the season 3 episode “The One With The Jam,” in which Phoebe starts dating her twin sister Ursula’s stalker, played by David Arquette, the then-husband of Courteney Cox. The co-creator explained, “We did a lot of rewriting on that to make it work.”
The second episode was from season 2, titled “The One With The Chicken Pox.” In the episode, Phoebe and her then-love interest, played by Charlie Sheen, endure a chickenpox outbreak during their romantic weekend together.
Kauffman might not be pleased with the episodes now, but she is likely in the minority. Many diehard Friends fans would agree that Phoebe and Ryan scratching each other with oven mitts is an iconic scene from the series.
Fans will know these two episodes aren’t the only parts about Friends that Kauffman regrets. As we previously reported, the producer has been open about how she feels on the jokes about Chandler’s dad. That storyline includes transphobic jokes that absolutely would not fly today. “I think we didn’t have the knowledge about transgender people back then, so I’m not sure if we used the appropriate terms,” Kauffman once said. “I don’t know if I would have known those terms back then. I think that’s the biggest one.”
This story was originally published on Mental Floss and is written by Jessica Bowman.
