The Winchesters is officially happening. The Supernatural prequel spin-off is set during 1972, and here’s all we know about the release so far.
While it’s been a long road to getting a Supernatural spin-off, the hard work finally seems to have paid off. The CW has ordered the prequel spin-off The Winchesters.
This spin-off is set in 1972, although there will be one very familiar face. Jensen Ackles will return as Dean Winchester, as he narrates the story about how his parents met and fell in love. There is a clear change to the story we’ve been told on the series, so it will be interesting to see how that is fixed before the series comes to an end.

The Winchesters release date
There isn’t a set series premiere date just yet, but we do have a good idea of one. The series is part of The CW’s fall lineup. It will air on Tuesdays at 8/7c, kicking off a night of new shows/acquisitions.
The CW will set the premiere dates a little closer to the time. We’re used to seeing this network premiere shows in the first or second week of October. That’s what we’re looking at for this series right now.
The Winchesters cast
We know that Ackles is returning as Dean Winchester to narrate the story. Ackles is also serving as EP on the series. Who else will be a part of the show?
Meg Donnelly will play Mary Campbell and Drake Rodger will play John Winchester.
They will be joined by:
- Bianca Kajilch as Millie Winchester (John’s mom)
- Jojo Fleites as Carlos Cervantez (a hunter friend of Mary’s)
- Nida Khurshid as Latika Desai (a hunter in training)
- Demetria McKinney as Ada Monroe
- Michael Taconi as Hank Murphy
We don’t have details of all cast members just yet or even who all the characters are.
The Winchesters trailer
The first trailer for the series is out. All of this footage is from the series premiere, as that’s the only episode filmed at this point. It sets the tone and style for the series.
The Winchesters synopsis
The series follows John Winchester, who is back from the Vietnam War and now wants to find out what actually happened to his dad, Henry Winchester. He runs into Mary Campbell one night and learns about the world of monsters and demons.
When Mary explains her father is missing, John decides to help her and her friends find him. He doesn’t have to get into the fight, but he wants to. Plus, he thinks this could be the way to find out about his own father. However, his mom doesn’t want him delving into this. Is that because she knows the truth?
The Winchesters will air on Tuesdays at 8/7c on The CW in the fall. Episodes will air the following day on The CW App.
