The Great season 2 release date, cast, synopsis, trailer, and more

The Great, Hulu‘s irreverent retelling of Catherine the Great’s life starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult, made quite the splash in 2020. Now, The Great season 2 is set to premiere to make an even bigger splash as Catherine takes Russia under her wing.

We last left off in the middle of her failed coup to overthrow her tyrant of a husband, Peter III. The two had grown closer, but his narcissism and her desire for the betterment of Russia outweighed the bond they’d begun to cultivate.

Too bad her plans fell through, now Catherine must make do with what’s in her control. Yes, that includes her pregnancy which could grant her power she didn’t have before. Royal houses are always concerned about heirs after all, and she’s currently carrying Russia’s.

Catherine has nine months to come up with a new plan. What will she do next to secure her and her baby’s future? Here’s what we know about season 2 of The Great.

The Great season 2 synopsis

The synopsis for the second season via Entertainment Tonight:

Catherine finally takes the Russian throne for her own — but if she thought coup-ing her husband was difficult, it’s nothing compared to the realities of liberating a country that doesn’t want to be. She’ll battle her court, her team, even her own mother (played by guest star Gillian Anderson) in a bid to bring the Enlightenment to Russia. Meanwhile, she’ll also battle her heart as Peter slowly transitions from a much-hated husband to a prisoner? Ally? Lover? Ultimately, Catherine will learn that to change a country, you must let it change you, that there is a fine line between idealism and delusion, and that becoming ‘Great’ will ask more of her than she could have imagined.

Sounds like Catherine is going to have her hands full running the country and dealing with her relationship with Peter which is evolving in a way she couldn’t have anticipated when they first met. There’s also her pregnancy to factor in which will likely bring the two even closer much to her consternation and chagrin. Here’s a look at the bump she’ll be sporting.

As for her mother, Joanna, coming for a visit, Catherine will have to contend with the “maestro of marriage” and her meddling.

Joanna’s matchmaking skills are unparalleled and they’ve served her family well. All of her daughter’s unions have been advantageous. Catherine’s coup in season 1, however, has threatened that enterprise. Joanna loves her daughter, but the family’s reputation is at stake. Drastic measures have to be taken even if they don’t serve the Empress of Russia.
