West Side Story premieres on Dec. 10, 2021, but will the movie be playing in theaters only or is it going to stream online, too? If so, where can you watch it from home?
The romantic musical drama is coming to life again. Based on the 1957 stage musical of the same name, West Side Story is directed by Steven Spielberg and stars Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler.
What is West Side Story about?
The story takes place in New York City in the 1950s, the movie follows Tony (Ansel Elgort) and Maria (Rachel Zegler), two teenagers who fall in love, but their families are in rival street gangs, the Jets and the Sharks, and prohibit the relationship.

When is West Side Story coming out?
The movie premiered on Nov. 29 at the Jazz at Lincoln Center, but its wide release is on Dec. 10, 2021, with limited screening beginning tonight, Dec. 9, 2021. The movie will be playing in theaters worldwide.
Where can you stream West Side Story online? Is the movie on HBO Max?
No, unfortunately, the movie will not be streaming on the HBO Max platform. The movie will also not become available on Netflix, Peacock, or Paramount+. West Side Story will be out exclusively in theaters and there has not been a streaming release announced. However, because this is a 20th Century Studios production, when it does leave theaters, it’ll likely stream on HBO Max, first.
