Demon Slayer season 2 episode 8 recap

We start this eighth episode titled “Gathering” with Tanjiro carrying a sleeping-Nezuko back to her box before heading off to the continued battle between our demon slayers and the Upper Rank demons. Though Tanjiro is still badly battered from his previous run-in with Daki, he vows to fight to the very end. But before he later joins the fight, Gyutaro, Daki, and our Sound Hashira exchange words.

Gyutaro ponders the extent of Tengen Uzui’s uniqueness, wondering how special he must be if he can have three wives, be full of swagger, and be equally matched with him and his sister in a fight. Uzui denies having any talent, stating that tons of strong demon slayers can do the same as him if not, more. As he says these words, he thinks fondly of his fellow Hashiras, Gyomei Himejima, Muichiro Tokito, and, of course, the late Kyojuro Rengoku.

While reflecting on his disposition, Uzui has a flashback to him and his wives meeting with Kagaya Ubuyashiki, the Hashiras’ master. Here, we see Kagaya thank Uzui for the path of protection he chose rather than the path of violence. This memory was exactly what he needed to be reinvigorated with the passion to bring down Gyutaro and Daki. Fired up, the three spar again.

Daki is briefly eliminated by Uzui as he swiftly chops her head off. He then heads to her brother, attempting to do the same thing, which lets us know he knows exactly how to finish these demon siblings for good, only needing a little more help to accomplish this. Right on cue, Inosuke, Zenitsu, and a zealous Tanjiro arrive at his aid.

On the other side of things, Uzui’s wives Makio and Suma escort citizens out of the Entertainment District to somewhere safer while the third wife, Hinatsuru, heads the opposite direction. Specifically, towards the epic fight where things just got a whole lot flashier and, for us, a lot more sentimental as we see our ever-passionate Rengoku come to Tanjiro’s mind when he thinks about how similar Rengoku and Uzui are when it comes to their ideals.

Shortly after this fond memory, the epic showdown begins again, this time with Zenitsu taking the first blow at Daki which separates her from her brother.

Zenitsu, still asleep, demands Daki to apologize to the innocent girl she hurt in episode 3 and later states that Daki shouldn’t hurt people simply because she was hurt by someone in the past. Refusing to do so, Daki becomes filled with bloodlust just like her brother and undergoes a brief yet powerful transformation where she gains one of her brother’s eyes.

While Daki uses her sharp belts to not only pierce through the roof but also fight Inosuke and Zenitsu to the death, Gyutaro and Tengen exchange blows. The fight proves to be too fast for Tanjiro to keep up with, leaving him with no choice but to fight on the offense with his Water Breathing technique. This is exactly what Tengen and Tanjiro needed to be in sync. And as if they already weren’t changing the tides of this fight, Hinatsuru arrives, firing her many wisteria laced-kunai towards Gyutaro.

Seeing this as an opportunity to put an end to this fight once and for all, Tanjiro pounces. What will become of this is to be seen in the next episode.
