HBO Max’s Penguin spin-off series release updates, cast, plot details, and more

The Batman is here! Matt Reeves’ version of Bruce Wayne’s story has finally hit theaters which means the clock has now started ticking toward the planned spin-offs for the universe created in the film. One such addition to this franchise is the Penguin spin-off series heading to HBO Max.

We spend such a short amount of time with Penguin in the film, but it’s enough to get the audience hooked on the potential of his story and his place among Gotham’s criminal underbelly and the pantheon of Batman’s villains.

While there’s not much known about the spin-off, we do have details we can share to tide fans over until more news concerning the show hits the web.

Here’s what we know!

HBO Max’s Penguin spin-off series release updates

There isn’t a release date for Penguin’s series as of yet. It still doesn’t have a name and there’s been no word on when production could start. If filming does begin sometime in 2022, then we may see the series land on HBO Max in 2023.

Currently, the show is development. Colin Farrell spoke to Comicbook.com about where they are in the process.

So far, the experience of maybe bringing Os into a six or eight hour journey is the same, it’s really collaborative. The writer, Lauren LeFranc has some extraordinary ideas. And it’s just that it’s kind of an amazing character to explore, his kind of awkwardness, and his strength, and his villainy, yes, his propensity for violence. But there’s also a heartbroken man inside there you know, which just makes it really tasty. I would love to do it. I won’t believe it until I’m in the suit, and in Mike Marino’s makeup, and I hear action, then I’ll believe and see.

So we’re looking at a six to eight episode series that’s definitely in the beginning stages of development but is far enough along to be talked about to the press.

HBO Max’s Penguin spin-off series cast

Currently, the only cast member signed on to this project is Colin Farrell. Where Reeves’ and the team intend on going with the story is being kept close to the vest as are any known Batman characters that could make an appearance.

HBO Max’s Penguin spin-off series plot details

Despite the plot being kept under wraps for the most part, if you’ve seen The Batman, you know where the story is likely to go. Dylan Clark, a producer on the series, described it as being akin to Scarface. As in, we’re in for a gangster origin story for Penguin.

That makes sense given the film’s ending. Below, we’ll share some major spoilers from The Batman, so we suggest coming back later to finish this article if you haven’t seen the movie yet.

Spoilers ahead of The Batman

The last shot of Penguin in the film consists of him looking over a Gotham dealing with the aftermath of a major catastrophe. The Riddler’s game culminated in a devastating loss for the citizens of the city, one that will make the wealth gap between them even more disparate.

A power vacuum has also opened up in the wake of a kingpin’s death. As such the criminals in town will by vying for the top spot and among them will no doubt be Penguin. Though he’s an underling in The Batman, he ran his boss’ entire operation.

The Iceberg Lounge, its secret club 44 Below, the Drops empire that’s been built, even down to security and entourage had all been handled by Penguin. He fashioned himself as a procurer, a supplier who asked no questions. Now, however, there’s room for him to take over, and that’s exactly what he plans to do in the spin-off series.

If this is really going to be a show focused on a gangster, then we expect the series to get the go ahead for an R rating to accommodate the violence, gore, drug use, profanity, and adult content the genre is known for.

We’ll keep you posted on more Penguin spin-off news. Stay tuned to Hidden Remote.
