Like the many families, children, and single bachelors across America and beyond, I sure do enjoy trips down to South Park, leaving my woes behind for half an hour at a time. Consequence to this, I’ve always hated that South Park seasons are traditionally kept at just ten a year. However, the 25th season of South Park may not even be going that far! Just how many more episodes from South Park season 25 will we get this year?
This article seeks to answer these questions, or at least pontificate on them for a moment, so let’s discuss what we know!
How many episodes are in South Park season 25?
Later tonight, March 16, South Park season 25 episode 6 will premiere on Comedy Central. Nothing to out of the ordinary, to the average person it would just look like the show is in the middle of its yearly run. However, on the industry side of things, six episodes are all that have been confirmed for this year.
For the time being, fans can only speculate as to what this means. Perhaps, this season will be shorter, capping at six episodes instead of ten, and there are lots of things you can point to as to the reason behind it. It could be the general decline of cable, South Park isn’t doing well in the Nielsen ratings, so what’s the point, right?
Or perhaps that’s only part of it, considering these episodes go up on HBO Max the next day, there is no way Matt and Trey aren’t walking away with the lion’s share. In fact, according to Puck, South Park was streamed for over 53 billion collective minutes in 2021. We divide that number by the length of a typical episode (22, let’s say) and that’s a little more than 2 billion episodes of South Park. That is a lot of poop and fart jokes, let me tell you. Mozart would be proud.
Another thing we can consider is Stone and Parker’s busy schedules with them juggling so many projects. There are the Paramount+ South Park movies, which I assume are in ongoing work (12 more to go btw), and then this new film deal with Kendrick Lamar. They must be sleeping like a college undergrad during finals week. How much time does that leave for the South Park season?
Of course, there is no fear that the show will be ending any time soon. Statistically speaking, one of the people reading this article (or even the person writing it) will meet their end before South Park does, with the show green lit to run on until its 30th season.
Will there be more South Park season 25 episodes after tonight?
All that said, there is no way to tell if this sixth season is indeed the finale. It is entirely possible the season will take a break for the year and resume later down the line. This is something becoming a bit more popular with serialized shows with weekly releases. Star Trek: Discovery did it, though they did confirm that they’d be coming back. The South Park show runners have been quiet as to the reason.
Perhaps we’ll get more of an understanding at the end of this next episode of South Park. It could end on such a cliffhanger that there’d be no question of the show returning. Maybe it will end in such a bang that it gives off a finale vibe. Maybe it will feel so stand-alone and self contained we won’t know what to think. All us South Park fans can do is wait patiently.
