In its title alone, the new Netflix series Anatomy of a Scandal, clues the audience into its tense premise. Before launching into the first episode, it’s clear that we’ll be in for a ride that’ll see lives turn apart. No scandal leaves anyone involved unscathed and, in the case of the Whitehouses, their standing in society and politics has been thrown into question.
On paper and in appearance, James and Sophie seem perfect. Their the quintessential elite couple with a promising future ahead of them and an accomplished present to indulge in. James is a member of Parliament, and Sophie’s been afforded the status that comes with being his wife. However, everything they built together begins to crumble once James affair comes to light.
If that weren’t enough, he’s also brought up on rape charges and must stand trial before a judge and a jury of his peers. The infidelity on top of these allegations threaten to end what Sophie thought was an amicable marriage full of love and partnership. It makes her question not only the man she knows James to be but also the things she’s let go regarding him in the past.
Anatomy of Scandal is six episodes of simmering tension that boils and boils until it eventually explodes. It’s a series with intense subject matter and could be unsettling for viewers if they aren’t prepared for what to expect. Here’s what we know about the thematic elements in the series.
Why is Anatomy of a Scandal rated TV-MA?
Anatomy of a Scandal is rated TV-MA for alcohol and drug use, strong language, nudity, and sexual violence. There are depictions of rape shown and discussed in detail. The courtroom litigation of the case against James could be triggering as the accusations lodged against him can be graphic and are distressing both in their depiction and in cross-examinations.
While this doesn’t affect the show’s rating, it should be noted that there’s a strobe light warning for any subscriber sensitive to light changes.
