Heartstopper, the latest teen drama to hit Netflix, is a coming-of-age series that’s steeped in romance. The primary relationship explored in the show is between Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson. The two boys unexpectedly hit it off which causes tension in both their friend groups and leads Nick to question his sexuality.
Over the course of eight episodes, they and their friends deal with the ups and downs of life. For Charlie and Nick in particular, this has much to do with figuring out where they stand with one another and exploring their feelings for each other. However, they aren’t the only romantic relationship in the show.

There’s also Tara and Darcy’s romance. The two girlfriends aren’t new to dating, but they are new to being public about their relationship. It takes some adjusting to especially in the face of lesbophobia and the shifting opinions of their classmates. Fortunately, though, they have each other and the support of their friends.
Also, there’s Elle and Tao, however, this pair are inching toward the line of something other than friendship and aren’t already dating. The series opens with the two best friends missing one another. Tao is constantly buying Elle’s apple juice even though she no longer attends the boys’ school. And, Elle clearly misses Tao the most out of their quartet of a friend group.
As the season progresses, the two are practically inseparable. They’re always texting one another, and Elle begins to develop feelings for Tao that are getting harder to ignore. Does she say something by the end of season 1? Here’s what we know!
Are Elle and Tao together in Heartstopper?
No, Elle and Tao aren’t together by the season 1 finale. While there is a moment in the episode where it seems like Elle is going to tell Tao how she feels, she decides not to in the end. But, we should note that this doesn’t mean the finale didn’t lay the groundwork for a potential romance between the two.
It was obvious that Elle and Tao wanted to kiss in episode 8, “Boyfriend,” and while they don’t, Elle is no longer the only one with sparks or little hearts popping around her hands or face. Tao watches her leave the art room and he gets the romantic art treatment that the characters typically get in Heartstopper when they like someone.
