Ice Age movies in order: How to watch the kids’ series

The Ice Age movies have been entertaining kids and adults alike for years. It’s become a huge franchise, centering on a group of mammals who survive the Paleolithic ice age.

The series features the voices of multiple actors including Chris Wedge, John Leguizamo, Ray Romano, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Lopez, and more. The first of the computer-animated adventure comedy films grossed over $383.2 million, making it the highest-grossing animated film in 2002.

The franchise has multiple movies, short films, and even television specials. With so much content, it can be hard to keep track of the films in chronological order. Here’s your guide to all the Ice Age movies.

All the Ice Age movies in order

The movie franchise has a total of five theatrical releases starting with the 2002 movie, Ice Age. Here’s a list of all the films in order by release date:

  • Ice Age (2002)
  • Ice Age: The Meltdown (2006)
  • Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009)
  • Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012)
  • Ice Age: Collision Course (2016)
  • The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild (2022)

All the Ice Age short films in order

The franchise also has a number of short films and a couple of television specials:

  • Gone Nutty (2002)
  • No Time for Nuts (2006)
  • Surviving Sid (2008)
  • Television special: Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas (2011)
  • Scrat’s Continental Crack-Up/Scrat’s Continental Crack-Up – Part 2 (2012)
  • Cosmic Scrat-tastrophe (2015)
  • Scrat: Spaced Out (2016)
  • Television special: Ice Age: The Great Egg-Scapade (2016)
  • The End (2022)

Ice Age movies and short films based on story

If you’re looking to watch the movies, short films, and television specials in order based on story events, here’s a breakdown:

  • Ice Age
  • Short: Gone Nutty
  • Ice Age: The Meltdown
  • Short: No Time for Nuts
  • Short: Surviving Sid
  • Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs
  • Television special: Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas
  • Short:  Scrat’s Continental Crack-Up/Scrat’s Continental Crack-Up – Part 2
  • Ice Age: Continental Drift
  • Television special: Ice Age: The Great Egg-Scapade
  • Short: Cosmic Scrat-tastrophe
  • Ice Age: Collision Course
  • Short: Scrat: Spaced Out
  • Short: The End

The only one not on the list above is the franchise’s latest film, The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild. It’s a standalone spin-off film that was released by Disney+ in January 2022. Because it’s a standalone, you could watch it any time. But the character of Buck was introduced in Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. So you’re best bet is to watch it right after the third movie.

The End is a 35 second short film where Scrat finally gets his acorn. It’s set as a goodbye to the franchise from Blue Sky Studios, which was the original Ice Age production company. Blue Sky Studios was a subsidiary of 20th Century Animation until its acquisition by Disney.

Another Ice Age film is being developed, however it’s not yet known if it will serve as the sixth theatrical film or if it’s another spin-off like the Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild.

Where to watch the Ice Age movies

All five of the main films, as well as the two television specials are now streaming on Disney+. Unfortunately, none of the short films are streaming anywhere at this time.

If you have the following DVD’s, then you’re in luck. Gone Nutty was released on the Ice Age DVD, No Time for Nuts can be found on the Ice Age: Meltdown DVD, Surviving Sid was released on the Horton Hears a Who! DVD and Blu-ray, and Scrat: Spaced Out can be found on the Ice Age: Collision Course DVD and Blu-ray.

When it comes to the other short films, there’s really no way to watch them as they were released alongside other movies like Rio and Alvin and the Chimpunks: Chipwrecked in theaters. They are not streaming on any platform at this time.

And finally, in April Disney+ premiered a set of six episodes for the franchise’s first foray into television. Ice Age: Scrat Tales is a spin-off and tells the story of Scrat discovering that he has a son.

Were you able to keep track of all of that? It’s going to take a while to get through all of these goodies!
