Is Batwoman canceled? (Has the show been renewed?)

Batwoman has had a tumultuous run on The CW. At first starring Ruby Rose as Kate Kane, the series grew a devoted fan base before it was plunged into controversy when Rose left after one season.

The big question became whether or not the series would be able to soldier on without her. When Javicia Leslie was passed the torch as a new Batwoman by the name of Ryan Wilder, the answer became clear. Yes, it could.

The second season of the series centered on Ryan’s origin story as the new bat and the mystery behind Kate’s disappearance once the team realized she hadn’t died in a plane crash after all. It brought closure to Kate’s run as the Scarlet Knight and introduced viewers to Ryan’s time with the cape.

Season 3, which is universally agreed upon as the show’s best season, upped the ante with an entire season devoted to re-imaginations of iconic Batman villains including Poison Ivy and the Joker. It was a season that also explored Ryan’s biological family, the internal struggles with Team Bat, a potential romance between Sophie and Ryan, and much, much more.

Is Batwoman canceled?

When the first batch of renewals came from The CW, Batwoman wasn’t on the list. It was a head scratcher for those of us used to Arrowverse shows getting renewals all together.

While fans had already been campaigning for the show’s renewal, efforts went into hyper drive. The show trended for weeks off and on as fans held watch-a-longs, discussed their favorite moments, and continuously praised the cast, crew, and writers for all the work they’d put into the season.

Unfortunately, the noise fans made didn’t sway The CW into renewing Batwoman. After three seasons, the show has been canceled, according to The Hollywood Reporter. News broke after showrunner Caroline Dries shared on her Twitter that the series wouldn’t be moving forward with a season 4.

This is a huge disappointment for all involved with Batwoman as well as the fan base who’ve poured their hearts into a renewal campaign in the hopes that they’d be returned to Ryan Wilder and the rest of Team Bat in the next TV season.

The CW Spiral podcast toasted Javicia Leslie’s portrayal of Ryan Wilder in a recent episode. While the show has been canceled, it doesn’t change the fact that Leslie brought something special to the series that it desperately needed. Check out their video below:
