Is Charlotte Spencer leaving Sanditon?

Period drama Sanditon has become a fan-favorite since the show aired in the U.S., especially when PBS became its parent network. The series is an adaptation of Jane Austen’s final novel, written months before her death in 1817.

The story follows Charlotte Heywood, played by actress Rose Williams. She’s a young woman who moves to the quiet fishing village of Sanditon, where a new seaside resort has been built. Charlotte has to learn how to navigate the scheming and ambitious locals. And there she meets charming Sidney Parker, played by actor Theo James.

The show’s season 2 finale gave us a happy ending for one character, Esther Denham. So was that the last we’ll see of her in the period drama?

Fans didn’t know it, but the season 2 finale indeed was the last time Esther will be on our screens in Sanditon. Actress Charlotte Spencer won’t be reprising her role in season 3. She’s been a part of the show since the first season. The news comes after the actress signed on to the new BBC/Paramount+ drama, The Gold, TVLine reports.

Head writer of the beloved series, Justin Young, told Decider the character has gotten everything she’s ever wanted and her story has come to a good close. He shared:

She’s happy, married, and now she has a child that she adores, so I think that’s the end of Esther’s story as far as I’m concerned.

It’s always sad to say goodbye to characters, especially when you’ve become so invested in their stories. And this news came as a surprise for the audience. But at least Esther’s arc has come to a satisfying ending, and we wish the actress the best of luck in her new project. She’s going to do great!

Sanditon has been renewed for season 3 and is expected to premiere sometime in 2023.
