Stranger Things season 4 episode 4 ending explained: What happens to Max?

Stranger Things season 4 is now streaming on Netflix and has left audiences with a big cliffhanger. Let’s back up, though, because Stranger Things season 4 episode 4 gave all of us a fright! What happened to our beloved Max (Sadie Sink)?

If you haven’t watched at least up Stranger Things season 4 episode 4, please note there are spoilers ahead! Go stream all seven episodes of part 1 on Netflix before reading on. Final spoiler alert! Now, to all who have already watched the available episodes, let’s get to it!

What happens to Max in Stranger Things season 4 episode 4?

Towards the end of episode 3, we learn that Max is in the early stages of Vecna’s attacks. She has been suffering from vivid nightmares and nose bleeds. Sure enough, in episode 4, we see Vecna move in for the kill.

The way Vecna kills his victims, is similar to Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street.  Vecna’s victims fall under a spell as he makes his victims confront their traumas, whether it’s something horrible they did or were the victim of trauma. Once Vecna grabs a hold of you, there’s no going back. But Max survived this attack thanks to the power of music!

Just before Vecna became successful in killing Max, Lucas placed headphones on Max and turned up the music, specifically, “Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)” by Kate Bush. A track that is now on our playlist. Listening to music, allows victims to see and pass through an escape. This is what Max does thanks to her friends coming through and we’s so glad! I won’t lie, I was afraid for Max for a second there. The character may have joined the series in season 2, but she quickly became a series favorite!

Stranger Things season 4 part 1 is now streaming on Netflix.
