All eyes are on Jennifer Aniston as she recently sat down with fellow celeb Sebastian Stan for an interview on Variety’s Actors on Actors series. Though fans loved to see the two A-listers together talking about their love of Friends and other fun topics, there’s one part of the video that’s rubbing people the wrong way. Aniston decided to comment on how people gain fame today, comparing it to the 1990s when she was becoming a household name.
Aniston and Stan began chatting about Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee, as Stan is still promoting his Hulu series Pam & Tommy. They briefly discussed how invasive being a celebrity is nowadays, with there not being any privacy anymore. From there, things took a turn, with the Friends alum claiming that many celebrities now become famous from the media and the internet without having to do anything. Aniston said:
“I feel so lucky that we got a little taste of the industry before it became what it is today. More streaming services — you’re famous from TikTok, you’re famous from YouTube, you’re famous from Instagram. It’s almost, like, it’s diluting the actor’s job.”
Jennifer Aniston comments on TikTok stars and influencers
According to Yahoo!, many Twitter users were unhappy to hear Aniston’s comments about people becoming famous for no reason. People called attention to the fact that the 53-year-old star is the child of two notable actors, Nancy Dow and John Aniston. According to those criticizing Aniston, she has no room to talk when she had an advantage when starting her career.
“jennifer aniston (nepotism baby) wants to talk about diluting the actors job. right,” one Twitter user said in response, while another wrote, “people are so angry that the industry is more diverse, more inclusive of people from all backgrounds who had nothing but a phone to prop up to showcase their dream when their communities were probably underfunded and overlooked. let’s keep making em mad.”
In the response to Aniston’s comments, Stan pivoted by talking about how auditions can be different when you’re going up for roles on a streaming service.
It’s certainly now a different time than it was back when Aniston was first getting her start, and we don’t expect all people from different generations to understand what’s trendy and popular today. That said, fans are really surprised by the negativity the actress shared in this interview.
