Friends alum Matthew Perry has been linked to his fair share of famous celebrities over the years, as it’s been reported he previously dated Julia Roberts, Neve Campbell, Lauren Graham, Lizzy Caplan, and more. As you’d expect, he’s also been involved in some flirtationships with fellow actors, one of which being actress/presenter Denise Van Outen. According to the 47-year-old British star, she turned down a date with the Chandler Bing star years ago.
As reported by the Mirror, Van Outen released a book back in February 2022 called A Bit Of Me: From Basildon To Broadway And Back, where she detailed the big moments of her life thus far. In one part, the Strictly Come Dancing alum decided to shed a light on her relationship with Perry, exposing him for asking her out while she was in a relationship with singer Jay Kay.

Apparently, Perry got Van Outen’s number from her agent and decided to call her up to ask her on a date. The theater actress wrote in her book, according to the Mirror, that Perry left her a voicemail saying: “I think you’re gorgeous, and I’d love to take you out on a date.”
Van Outen ultimately said no to Perry, and the whole situation was certainly awkward for her boyfriend. According to Zimbio, she dated Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay from 1998 to 2001. Van Outen wrote in her book that hearing Perry’s voicemail kept Kay in check. Though it hasn’t been confirmed when exactly Perry asked her out, the timeframe was during the peak popularity of Friends.
“Knowing I was being chased by a prominent American TV star was bound to keep my new rock star boyfriend on his toes,” Van Outen wrote in her book.
Now, all these years later, and Van Outen is a single woman again after splitting from Eddie Boxshall. The two were engaged and were together for seven years.
As for Perry, fans know he’s also single since splitting from talent manager Molly Hurwitz in 2021 after about three years of dating. The two were engaged at the time of their breakup.
No one’s to say whether or not Perry and Van Outen would’ve worked out if they did try to date, but it’s interesting that she’s recalling the phone call all these years later. We’ll be curious to see if Perry has anything to say in response.
