Apple TV+’s new original series Roar premiered on April 15, and the show already has people talking. The eight-episode season dropped all at once on the streaming service, giving us viewers plenty of binge-watch material over the weekend.
The star-studded anthology series stars Issa Rae, Nicole Kidman, Betty Gilpin, Alison Brie, Meera Syal, Merritt Wever, Cynthia Erivo, Fivel Stewart, and Kara Hayward. Very well-known faces also filled the guest star roles.
The series takes on eight stories to explore the different issues women face everyday. Roar is based on a book of short stories by Cecelia Ahern, which depicts these issues through some unconventional metaphors – eating photographs, guilt literally eating away at you, and a woman of color who can’t be seen by white people.
With a host of female leads in front of and behind the camera, Roar caused quite a buzz before its release. So is it worth checking out?
Should you watch Roar on Apple TV+?
I feel like this series isn’t for everyone. I’ve been seeing pretty good chatter about it on Twitter, but honestly I don’t think it’s worth your time.
You can’t complain about the stellar acting or the issues depicted. Those were all chosen very well. But overall, the show didn’t resonate or impact me the way it’s supposed to. The episodes are only about 30 minutes, and it felt like such a drag with most of them. I was just waiting for the episode to be over.
Some delivered a great conclusion, while others wasted so much time getting to the climax of the story and when it did, it was very quickly wrapped up in the end. The episode that did this most was the very first, “The Woman Who Disappeared.” It was actually really good up until the rushed ending.
Episode 5, “The Woman Who Was Fed By a Duck,” is the episode I think everyone online is going to be talking about. And it’s because of a pretty uncomfortable scene. I think the story overall was done really well except for the fact that Elisa’s boyfriend was a duck. Literally.
Going in, I knew the show was going to portray women’s challenges in really unconventional ways, and I was fine with the whole duck thing up until the two were, ahem, intimate. Yeah, they went there. Other than that weird scene that I’d like to erase from my memory, the story depicted a slowly building abusive relationship really well and gives you a satisfying ending.
“The Woman Who Returned Her Husband” was by far the best episode in the series, and pretty much the only one really worth your time. In a world where women can just return their husbands in exchange for another at the supermarket, the story explores a couple who learn to appreciate each other after they’ve actually spent time apart. The two realize the mistakes they both made, and it’s a really sweet and fun ending.
Roar had its good moments overall and the acting was on point across the board. But if you’re wondering whether to watch or skip, I would say skip it. I had high hopes for the series, and unfortunately it didn’t deliver.
All eight episodes of Roar are now streaming on Apple TV+.
